One of the best-kept secrets in Silicon Valley may be that Apple has some of the best computer software for Web application development. While all the world�s attention has been focused on Apple�s sleek and powerful Internet-ready desktop and portable workstations, Apple�s world-class software developers have been cutting and polishing some jewels of their own. It is frequently forgotten that Apple�s purchase of NeXT brought into Apple a team of pioneers in standards-based, component/object-oriented, network- distributed computing. This has not traditionally been an area of strength and experience for Apple, and the company justifiably views its position as one in which it must provide solutions that not only clearly demonstrate that it can be a serious player, but it must do it better than the others.

quarter losses of between $130 million and $140 million, also saw its stock dive 63%. They make firewall and other security software.
